CCIH Member Biography

Dr. Steven Semelman, B.Sc. Pharm., Pharm. D.

Sharma Sanjiv Dr. Semelman is currently President, Gemini Pharma Consultants Ltd.; a firm specializing in pharmaceutical and private and public healthcare consulting on drug market access, drug pricing, contract management, health outcome assessment, clinical pharmacy and research, pharmacy benefit management, and formulary development.

Recently Steve was the Vice President, Pharmacy Business Initiatives for the Katz Group Canada Ltd. (Rexall Pharmacies). He was responsible for developing new business divisions and relationships with businesses that emphasized the health of their employees through medication therapy management, health promotion and disease management programs, as well as new drug plan design management techniques.

Prior to joining Katz Group Canada Ltd., Steve was with ESI Canada and held various positions in the company, including Vice President-Health Management and Operations and President-ESRx Essential Research.

Steve is also an advisor to organizations in the pharmaceutical, insurance, business, and public sectors on drug market access, drug pricing, contract management, health outcome assessment, clinical pharmacy and research, pharmacy benefit management, and formulary development. He has made representation and been a member of various provincial and federal working groups on healthcare.

Steve holds an appointment at the University of Toronto , Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and instructs pharmacy students at the University in health management issues.

His previous experiences include positions as Associate Director of Pharmaceutical Services at Saskatoon City Hospital , Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan , and as Director of Pharmacy Services and Clinical Lecturer at Kingston General Hospital and Queen’s University School of Medicine.

He is a member and past Chair of the Canadian Council on Integrated Healthcare; a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy; a member of the Canadian Pharmacists Association Advisory Board for Pharmacy Practice; a member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (past president for Ontario and Saskatchewan), the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores, and the Ontario and Saskatchewan Pharmacists Associations.

Steve has received awards for and published numerous articles on clinical pharmacy and health care issues. Steven is the recipient of two awards for executive leadership: Presidential Who’s Who in North America (2009) and Who’s Who in Canadian Healthcare (2003).

Steve holds Bachelors degrees in Arts and Sciences and Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island , a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota , and a certificate in Health Services Administration from the University of Ottawa .

Steve lives in Oakville , Ontario with his wife, also a pharmacist, and his two children.
